On August 3rd, 2012 in Can Tho city Siemens organized a clinical workshop on productive health with a topic: “Prenatal Screening for Down Syndrome”.  This workshop aims at introducing the process and new techniques in prenatal risk screening to obstetricians thus contributing to improve the quality of population in Vietnam. Invited speakers are the leading specialists working in the field of OB/GYN, laboratory and genetics at big hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City. There were over 100 doctors and physicians from 6 provinces in Mekong Delta attending this event.
Down syndrome is the common disease of fetal chromosome anomalies. One of every 800 to 1,000 babies is born with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is caused by the presence of part of a third copy of chromosome 21 (excess of 1 compared with the normal baby). Most of children with Down syndrome are intellectual disability associated with the inborn malformation of other organs. Children with Down syndrome have limited ability to learn, therefore, they depend completely on their family.
In Vietnam the Prenatal Diagnostics Centers are only available in big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and this is the disadvantage in having access to productive healthcare service of residents from provinces and small cities. Meanwhile it is vital for doctors to early detect the fetal anomalies in order to provide timely interventions. Hence Siemens organized the clinical workshop on Prenatal Down Syndrome Screening in the Mekong Delta with an aim to provide and update obstetricians with latest process, techniques and comprehensive solutions in this regard.
